Just like you would not leave your home for work without locking the front door, you shouldn’t leave your storage container unlocked in the backyard. While it’s not likely that a burglar will attempt to get inside your container to steal the goods contained therein, you don’t want to take that chance, do you?
A lock will keep your goods secure and prevent unauthorized access. It will also make you look good in the eyes of your insurance company. Let’s go over the options you have for locks when it comes to your shipping container modifications. It’s likely you will have to buy a lock as an add-on.
1. Container Padlocks
Padlocks are a classic type of lock for securing cargo. But you will have to get a special version of a padlock that is designed for shipping containers in particular. This is a U-shaped steel lock that attaches to the loop inside the unit’s lock box.
They come in a variety of styles and materials, giving you top-notch security for your shipping container. The lock box holds the padlock’s shackle, so it’s tougher to access and tamper with. Container padlocks come in like-keyed batches from the manufacturer.
2. Crossbar Locks
Crossbar locks are also popular. They are extendable clamps made from tubular steel. You attach these locks to the container’s door on the locking rods or handles. Thanks to the keyed lock mechanism, the clamp can be securely fastened so the doors won’t open.
Crossbar locks resist bolt cutters and lock picks. Some models come with extensions for bars that are placed further apart than the standard nine to 16 inches. They also come in like-keyed batches for your convenience.
3. Truck Seals
These are the least expensive and most common type of lock for shipping containers. They work in a similar fashion to plastic zip ties and therefore should only be used in areas with low security risks. You can also use them to prevent the doors from swinging open accidentally. That being said, there are also high-security models made of thick metal bolts.
4. Hidden Shackle Padlocks
This type of lock is easy to use, giving you the functionality of a padlock yet the tampering protection of a deadbolt or single latch lock. The shackle is hidden within the body, so it’s impossible to cut with bolt cutters. Use this type of lock if you have high-value cargo to protect. Order them with matching hasps to mount the locks.
5. Roll Door Lock Boxes
This type of lock box is designed specifically for shipping container roll-up doors. They come in many designs. You can install them on the bottom of the door, or you could try a more traditional hasp-style lock that utilizes a padlock.
It’s important to keep your goods safe from burglars or intruders. We hope this list helps you choose the best lock for your shipping container.
